What are the differences between Heated, Treated and Unheated Gems?

99% of the gemstones for instance, Sapphire and Ruby that you see in the shops are commonly heated.
Though basic heating is accepted in the trade, its value can never rival its unheated counterparts of the same quality.

Unheated/ Untreated

This is the most sought-after and priced, natural state of a gemstones. An unheated/ untreated gems is created by nature and has not undergone any form of treatment.

Since value is based on rarity and demand, unheated gemstones are usually sold, if found, with 3 to 5 times the price of a comparable heated piece.

When investing in such rare gems, always obtain a certificate from a reputable, independent gemological lab to guarantee the condition.

Heated/ Thermally Enhanced

Sapphires are commonly heated to enhance its color and clarity. Some heat treatment processes are relatively mild, using temperature of approx. 400 degree Celsius for short periods of time.

This form of treatment improves a Sapphire color and clarity and is accepted in the trade as "Heated" (with no other chemical), some termed as "Basic Heat", "Mild Heat", "Heated with Low Temperature" etc.

Before and after heating of a parcel of Blue Sapphires.

Other Treatments

Other than the above, there are various other treatments these days since technology is moving forward. Specimens (I do not use the term "Gems" for non gem quality stones) are heated at high temperature with infused chemical.

Just to name a few, Beryllium/ Titanium treatment (Diffusion processes), Fracture Filling, Irradiation...etc. These are extreme treatments that alter the structure of the gems, it may result in a sapphire with a desirable color, however, its durability is compromised and there is absolutely no value whatsoever for these treated specimens. And well, they actually cost close to nothing...and some will still call it "Natural Sapphire".

Hence, I can't emphasize more to insist on a reputable report.

Be an informed customer, shop around, do your homework to prevent being cheated and at the same time you will know that you got yourself a deal with us :)

We do not provide the above-mentioned treated gems.

Basically, we only supply gems that are completely natural and Unheated or with Mild Heat/ Low temperature (trade accepted) quality.

What is the difference between an "In-house Certificate" and one from an Independent Gem Lab?

"In-house Certificate" from shops literally means that the gems or diamonds are graded by the shop's employed gemologist.

Do note that it's crucial to select an independent, reputable gem lab that does not sells gemstones at the same time for a more credible and unbiased report.

GIA, GIT, AIGS, NGI are some established gem labs and educational institutes.

How much should I be looking at?

This is foremost the most important question that comes to one's mind.

Let's take for example, a ring. It’s much dependent on the size and quality of the gem that you'd like. Next, for the setting, we will take into account the complexity of the design and the amount of gold and diamonds required.

Do note that higher total carat weight of diamonds does not equate to a higher cost should the individual diamond size be small.

For instance, a ring with a diamond carat total weight of .36 carats (using 36 pcs of each .01 carats diamond melees), will cost significantly less than a ring having a single diamond of the same diamond carat weight.

In other words, larger size diamond costs more. That's the reason why cluster diamond ring is an affordable substitute for single diamond solitaire.

In general, to customize a carat size, quality unheated colored gem ring in white gold with diamond accent would be priced from Sgd 3280. A simpler solitiare setting with less intricacy will cost less. Feel free to leave us an email to enquire.

When would you suggest not to customize?

This question might surprised some.

I would personally recommend customization for a piece of gem with value that is justifiable for its customization cost.

However, if you are looking for a more commercial grade gem or/of a simple generic design, it might be a better option to obtain one directly from the malls. As they usually hold mass produced simple settings, with heated, modest size gems that could save you quite a bit of money.

What is the difference between Native Cut and Precision Cut Gems?

Since quality gem materials are rare and gems are sold by weight, most gems in the market are cut to retain its weight. These are termed the "Native Cut".

"Windows" are commonly seen in native cut gems whereby gems are cut way too shallow in order to increase its "face-up" size. Windowed gems lack brilliance and is visually unpleasant as light is unable to bouce back into the eyes. One can easily look through the gems from its table.

Native Cut Gems are usually cut in factories, in the country where they were mined, lopsidedness, Off centre culet are typically seen in native cut gems.

Good quality native cut gems are available too, you just have to know how to look for one. We do supply good quality native cut gems.

Precision Cut Gems are the opposite. They are a piece of art on their own.  Precision Gem Cutters pay special attention to ensure every facets and angles are cut to exacting meet-point, symmetry and proportion to ensure maximum brilliance with high polish. A time-consuming process. Truly for the connoisseurs.

Due to the factors above, precision gems cost significantly more than a native cut gems.

How do I know my US or Hong Kong Ring size?

Every country uses different sizing chart. Here is a Ring Size Conversion Chart for your reference.

A point to note, for solitaire style setting with thin band, it is advisable to choose slightly smaller size as this type of design tends to fit looser and turns when worn.

For a thicker band design, it is recommended to go up a size or so as it tends to be of a tighter fit.

Is a 1 carat size Diamond the same as a 1 carat size Sapphire?

Not exactly. Gems vary in density, thus a sapphire and a diamond of the same weight are different in sizes. Sapphires tend to be heavier, so a 1 carat sapphire is usually smaller in size than a diamond of the same carat.

It's easier to work in mm (millimeters) sizes rather than carat size for colored gems.

What types of precious metal do you work with?

We craft in 9k/14k/ 18k White/ Yellow and Rose Gold as well as PT900, PT950 PT1000 Platinum.

What is the difference between Full Cut Diamond Melee and Single Cut Diamond Melee?

Diamonds are popular accent stones used in jewelry due to its brilliance, fire and scintillation.

"Melee" refers to small diamonds that weigh .18 carats and below. Well cut diamond melees can separate extraordinary, fine jewelry from the lower end ones.

You have a choice between full cut and single cut diamond melees, its really to personal preference though its interesting to note that most fine jewelries prefer to use full cut diamond melees.

Performance

Single cut diamond melee has only 17 or 18 facets.
Full cut diamond melee has 57 or 58 facets.
These two types of melees have slightly different light performance. Due to more facets, the full cut diamond melees appear to have more dispersion, moving lights. Whereby the single cut diamond melees appear brighter as more white light is reflected.

Imagine looking at a wall mirror with a light source. You will see big bright light being reflected, pretty much like the single cut diamond melee.

Now imagine looking into a mirror with cracks. In the same light source, you will see a lot more scattered reflections, dancing lights. This is much like the full cut diamond melee.

Cost

Cutting less number of facets calls for less effort and time, hence single cut diamond melees are priced slightly lower than the full cut diamond melees

Are Colored Gems graded the same as Diamond?

No. not exactly. There is no universal clarity/ color grading standard for colored gems. In colored gems, color is the key factor in determining quality. Each gem type and color has its own specific evaluation criteria.

Minor clarity difference in diamond greatly affects its price and value. However it's a rather different story when it comes to colored gems, minor clarity difference rarely affects the price. In fact, in some cases, a gem may have a higher value due to its lower clarity grade.

For instance, Russian Demantoid is more valuable for its"horsetail" inclusions which is regarded as a desirable feature.

Velvety Blue Kashmir Sapphire that seems to glow is caused by its minor rutile inclusions.

In general, there is no flawless rating for colored gems, inclusions are bound to be detected under high powered magnification. This is nature's proof :)

Hence, buyers should look for gems that are eye clean or with inclusions that do not detract the overall beauty of the gems, otherwise, you will be missing out many fine gems.
